FOTE has had a long association with Yongar Reserve in Forrestfield. For several years, students from Dawson Park Primary School and Darling Range Sports College (formerly Forrestfield Senior High School) have been involved in efforts to rehabilitate the reserve under the guidance of volunteers from FOTE. Work has included the eradication of weeds, planting of native plant species, some of which have been raised at Dawson Park Primary School, mulching and ongoing maintenance. Most recently, students from Darling Range Sports College were involved in planting sedges along Crumpet Creek within the reserve. |

Carmel Sustainability Fair 2009 |
|
Following the success of the inaugural fair during 2008, we are delighted to be staging an even bigger and better event during 2009. The fair will again be held in conjunction with the Bickley Carmel Harvest Festival and will be open from 10:00am to 3:00pm on Sunday May 3. As with last year, the fair will be held in the magnificent grounds of Carmel Adventist College. We are working on confirming a larger number of stallholders and speakers for this year’s event. We expect that there will be stalls and talks featuring solar panels, solar vehicles, permaculture, no-dig veggie gardening, composting, beekeeping, raising chickens, backyard aquaponics and much more. To keep the kids happy we will be setting up a special play area including a range of kid-friendly activities. We’ll have a greater range of hot and cold food and beverages available. |

At our 2008 fair, the chickens proved the star attraction for kids. Our 2009 fair will feature even more to keep the kids entertained. |

One of the missions of FOTE is to facilitate projects that not only enhance the sustainability of our communities, but that also provide education opportunities in relation to sustainability. In keeping with this, FOTE members have been working to develop a Farmer’s Market in the Kalamunda area. Farmer’s Markets bring a wide range of benefits. Farmers benefit by receiving a fairer share of the profit from sale of their produce and by developing a valuable local “Hills Fresh” brand. Consumers benefit by getting access to fresh, local produce. The community benefits from having a vibrant weekly event at which to meet and enjoy a chat, that showcases the produce and beauty of the area. FOTE has now joined forces with the Kalamunda Chamber of Commerce to develop a detailed proposal to take to the Kalamunda Shire Council. We are hoping to have the market up and running in time for the Carmel Sustainability Fair (see article below), so stay tuned! |
